The company in question was founded 3½ years ago by two engineers, Rod Slater and David Wren. The company now employs 20, specialising in the Design and Build of automation machinery for the plastics moulding industry, for example, machines to mass produce CD and DVD cases and more recently for contact lens manufacture.
Problem 1: The nature of the work means the company has to control very large Bills of Materials that are often being designed in one area whilst purchasing and building is under way in others.
Problem 2: In this environment, a system of Purchase Ordering using spreadsheets was becoming slow, cumbersome and was increasingly prone to errors as the company's order book rapidly expanded.

Problem 3: An essential part of the manufacturing process is controlling component costs at project, assembly, sub-assembly and purchase order level and ensuring that the actual costs do not greatly exceed the planned costs. The spreadsheet solution did not address this satisfactorily.
Problem 4: Labour costs were not being included in any of the spreadsheet calculations. The company required a way in which to plan, record and monitor labour costs by project to determine profitability at every stage of assembly. Solution: The FactoryMaster MRP Production Control System, incorporates a well organised and easy to use Multi-Level Bill of Materials from which Works Orders can quickly be raised and Project Purchase Ordering initiated. Up-to-the-minute project and labour costs can be viewed throughout assembly.
