Continuous Hinges

Cooke Brothers manufacture the most extensive range of continuous hinges in the U.K. from stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium and brass. Hinges are available in standard lengths of 1.8 meters and vary in width from 13mm to 150mm. Stock hinges in the range suit many applications including, furniture manufacturing, security cabinets, metal fabrications, automotive and general engineering.

Over 50% of Cooke Brothers continuous hinges are produced to modified designs to meet the customers` precise specifications and are to be found in daily operation in a multitude of diverse applications and industries worldwide.

Alternatively known as piano hinge, stemming from its origin as a hinge for piano keyboard lids. Continuouse hinge today has become a much broader band of products, covering hinges from 0.5mm thick material for trinket boxes, to 5mm thick for use on blast doors.

Continuous hinges, sometimes defined as long narrow butt hinges, have distinct advantages over the use of several shorter butt hinges. Cutt down to match the full length of the door or lid to be hinged, continuous hinges provide support along the whole length, ensuring that the door and frame are kept in perfect alignment. Of equal importance, continuous hinge evenly distribute the load over the whole length of the door aperture.

Hinge Fittmet, Instalation & Dimension

Installation of continuous hinge

Figure 1

Fitted between end faces of the door and frame

Care should be taken to ensure that the frame and door thickness are sufficient to take the selected continuous hinge between the end faces.

Figure 2

For 180 degree movement a minimum of half the overall hinge barrel diameter should protrude beyond the external face. This requires the thickness of the frame and door to be at least half the hinge open width ie: C/2

The outer edges of the hinge leaves should never protrude beyond the internal faces of the frame or the door.

Figure 3

If it is acceptable for the full knuckle diameter to protrude beyond the external face, then the frame and door should be a minimum of the hinge leaf inside face width.

Figure 4

Externally fitted to door and frame.

If the frame or door is too thin to acheive this, then one of the other installation options should be selected ( Fig 4 - 6 )

Figure 5

Spot welded using no hole continuous hinge to the external faces of metal plates, or MIG, TIG, MMA welded or riveted in place using pre-pierced holes.

Figure 6

Fitted to the internal faces of metal plates, with only the hinge knuckle visible from the outside. Fixing methods as fro Figure 5.

Key to Continuous hinge dimensions

A :

Hinge Leaf thickness - The hinge material thickness should be selected first as this establishes the range of continuous hinge most suitable for your application.

E :

Hole centres - Un-drilled hinges are referred to as "No hole".

B :

Hinge pin diameter - For each hinge leaf thickness there is a limited range of hinge pin options twice and five times the hinge leaf thickness. F : Hole diameter if un-countersunk - Refered to as "Plain holes"
